At the weekend I went on a Feed the Birds Day Walk at Bempton Cliffs.
It was a guided walk and we saw seabirds and garden birds. I saw a large black bird perched on the sheet cliff face. The guide told me it was a Jackdaw! It seems they are cliff nesting birds. Fancy. Jackdaws [...]

I’ve had to put wire and string round one of my birdtables to stop the big birds getting onto the actual table. It works. That is - it worked up to last week.

Birdtables are not the place for a magpie or jackdaw. They scavenge the bird food off the table in seconds and the smaller garden birds don’t stand a chance of getting any food.
Magpies (shown above) are usually self sufficient creatures and usually manage to find food in the coldest of weather. As do jackdaws.

Hi folks
I was right trimmed I’d managed to stop bird feed falling to the ground from my feeder by attaching a tray to the bottom of the feeder. The seed now falls into the tray and not onto the floor where the farm hens and wild pheasants used to eat it.

I haven’t seen our Barn Owl for a few days. It’s a pity the jackdaw jumped to the front of the housing queue and pinched the Barn Owl’s new, purpose build Barn Owl Box that we’d just put up.

Wow! There are owls nesting in an owl box we put up earlier in the year. We purchased this owl box from The Hawk and Owl Trust because we have seen and heard owls nearby. They are so graceful in flight and seem to own the air.
