Should bird tables be placed out in the open or near a hedge.

I may have to buy a mesh covered bird table after all

I’ve had two different bits of advice about bird tables.
 One person said put the birdtable near a hedge.  Birds can dodge sparrowhawks etc if they are in a hedge.  Do not put a bird table out in the open as a bird of prey has a clear view and can strike easily.

I chose my new bird table carefully.
