Hi
I think we have got a pair of yellow hammers in a wheat field. I take the dog down the track in the middle of the wheat field every night - not a tree in sight. Two birds swoop along beside me , about head height, making a sharp, piercing sound. They sit on an ear of wheat & then repeat the performance - as though they are warning me off. This has been going on for the last week.
They have very yellow fronts & a bit of yellow goes round their neck. They have a black tail, with a couple of white feathers on the edge. Both birds look the same.
I am not sure if they are yellow hammers, but cannot think what else they are. It seems a strange place to find them, as I am sure they used to be a garden bird when I was small.
