Alchemy -
When sunbeams warm
the sleeping Earth,
and blackbird sings
for all he's worth
to welcome Spring,
proclaim the birth
Of beauty, hope
and joy and mirth.
When gold adorns
bright shrub and tree,
and buttercups grow
wild and free,
spreading far
as eye can see....
that's Alchemey enough
for me.

This past week I have had the fun of watching, what to me looks like a black bird with a long white tail. I did get a few photo’s of it, I hope to get more tomorrow that are clearer. What a neat bird to see!
I live south of mason city, Iowa. Is there any way for me to post a photo?

i just saw a white tailed blackbird at my feeder. First one i’ve ever seen. It was the size of a grackle/blackbird and had a pure white tail no other markings. I have also searched for info on this bird with no success. Is it an actual species or an anomaly? I live in Ontario, Canada. Are they actually called a “white tailed blackbird”?

Sorry I have been so long replying. I have had a little technical trouble with Bird Table News, but it is sorted now
I think the opinion is that white feathers in blackbirds means an imbalance of some sort. It could be a sign of an aged bird, the bird has had an injury and the feathers have now grown back as they should. It can also be a sign of lack of correct proteins in their food
If you have a minute click this link and read an article – http://birdtablenews.com/2009/02/some-reasons-for-birds-with-white-feathers/
If poor diet is one cause then it could effect many birds if food is scarce.

Hi Trisha,
I’ve just had a good read around your website. It has really filled me with joy to see someone writing about our birds and obviously having a real enthusiasm for these wonderful birds. Keep up the good work, I’ll be returning to catch up with what has been happening in your garden. Steve.
