Feed the Birds on Christmas Day

Posted on December 25th, 2009 in Birdy Ramblings on my daily dawdle by Trish

Don’t forget to feed the birds on Christmas Day.
Christmas Day is a special day for us but for our feathered friends it’s just another day when they have to search for food or else they will starve.

I get such a lot of birds to my feeders.  On Christmas Day,I’ll have  time to feed them as well as having time to give and receive presents.

It’s good to get outside on a morning into the fresh air.

My old man says that it takes me as long to feed the birds and sort the bird seed and bird feeders out as it does for him to feed his herd of cows. He could be right!

I could only use one feeder. But which one?

  • The covered meshed feeder is good because it keeps the larger birds out and lets thrushes, blackbirds, sparrows, blue tits and other smaller birds get at the food. I can’t stop using that bird feeder.
  • The two bird tables are used by a variety of garden birds (and also by rooks, crows, pigeons and jackdaws). I can’t stop using those.
  • The fat ball feeder is popular and the sparrows cling on to get at the fat balls. The blue tits are a lot more agile. We’ve also had a woodpecker clinging on to get at the fat balls. I can’t stop using that feeder.
  • The peanut feeder is popular and peanuts are a good nutrition. I can’t stop using that feeder.
  • The millet feeder is going down a storm. The sparrows never leave it alone. They clambour over each other to get at the feed. So I can’t stop using that feeder.
  • The mixed seed feeder needs filling up every day and the birds seem to be waiting in the branches. As soon as I fill this bird feeder up they descend onto it. So I can’t stop using that feeder.

Better just carry on as before.
You don’t need as many feeders as I have to feed the birds.

As we enjoy Christmas Day lets turn out thoughts to nature and spend a few minutes putting bird food out.  It’s good to give as well as receive!

HAPPY CHRISTMAS

Posted on December 24th, 2009 in Bird Friends Around the World by Trish

Happy Christmas everyone,

Infant holy,
Infant lowly
For His bed a cattle stall;
Oxen lowing,
Little knowing,
Christ the Babe is Lord of all.
Swift are winging,
Angels singing,
Nowells ringing,
Tidings bringing,
Christ the Babe is Lord of all.

Flocks were sleeping;
Shepherds keeping,
Vigil till the morning new
Saw the glory,
Heard the story,
Tidings of a Gospel true.
Thus rejoicing,
Free from sorrow,
Praises voicing,
Greet the morrow,
Christ the Babe was born for you

Bird Like Dinosaurs had poisonous bites

Posted on December 24th, 2009 in Bird Eating Bird by Trish

A skull and part of the skeleton of a dinosaur has been found at the site of a prehistoric forest in north East China.

The dinosaur had teeth that are like teeth of rear-fanged snakes and venomous lizards.

Some of the fang like teech which are on the upper jaw had grooves that scientists think poison ‘flowed’ through.

So this dinosaur may killed its prey by poisoning it.

The dinosaur that was found is a feathered raptor.

It was about the size of a turkey and 128 million years ago it preyed on birds using its fangs.

A bird with a bite that delivers poison.  I wonder why it died out.

A YORKSHIRE CHURCH AND THE NATIVITY

Posted on December 23rd, 2009 in Birdy Ramblings on my daily dawdle by Trish

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas

Where has 2009 gone?

It only seems five minutes since I went to the 2008 Carol Service and watched the Nativity.  Now the 2009 Service is over.

Village children, a Yorkshire  Church full of people and lit only by Christmas Tree lights for part of the service.

The voices of children singing Away in a Manger. Later,   then later in the Service all the congretation singing filled the Church with sound.   The Church Organ music reverberated round the Church as it has done for many years.

Churches were made to be filled with sound and singing – it brings them to life

I like being able to sing a Christmas songs  from memory and not have to look at the words on the Carol Sheet.  I think the words mean more.   There is something nice about singing with a lot of other people as well.

Watching the children in Church perform the Nativity made me realise once again that Christmas is really a religious festival.  How did it get so commercialised?

After the Carol Service in the Church tea and biscuits were served so everyone stopped to chat. Children ran around in Nativity Costume and their laughter filled the Church.  Neighbours, community and Church – all together for one hour.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL

I WONDER IF IT IS TOO MUCH TO WISH FOR PEACE ON EARTH AS WELL

Heated Water Bowls for birds!

Posted on December 22nd, 2009 in Uncategorized by Trish

I have 2 heated dog water bowls for all the birds that come to my yard every day, one in the front yard and one in the back yard.

It gets in the minuses, but these water bowls keep the water at 50 degrees so there is always fresh water every day this way for all the many beautiful birds. I refresh it every day.

Tip for freezing water in bird baths

Posted on December 22nd, 2009 in Water for Birds by Trish

Tip for freezing water in bird baths.
Use a plastic liner(old plastic bags work well) then fill with water.
Place in bird bath.
When water is frozen just lift liner out a lot easier than
breaking ice up or using hot water.

Posted on December 21st, 2009 in Bird Food by Trish

I am still using Guardman’s No Mess Seed mix every day.

It is a very useful bird food.  I put it in a hanging bird feeder, on a bird table and use it as a ground food

Click the blue link below which will take you to  the article about why I use this bird food

BUSY BIRD FEEDING

Posted on December 20th, 2009 in Photographs by Trish

I’ve been feeding my family of birds a lot today.  They are wild birds – should they depend on my bird food so much?  Am I doing the right thing?

Here are some photos  (apologies for the space inbetween the photos – I can’t seem to get rid of these gaps!)

I think I don’t have a choice when you see the conditions that have been in this area over the last few days.

Overnight-snow!
