Nursery Rhymes, Poems and Prayers about birds

Posted on January 27th, 2009 in Poems and Nursery Rhymes about birds by Trish

I thought it would be a good idea to put some nursery rhymes and also poems and prayers  about birds together.   Here they are some nursery rhymes

LITTLE ROBIN REDBREAST
Little Robin Redbreast
Came to visit me
This is what he whistled,
Thank you for my tea.

Pit, pat, well-a-day,
Little Robin flew away.
Where can little Robin be:
Gone into the cherry tree.

BIRDS OF THE AIR
A wise old owl sat in an oak,
The more he heard the less he spoke
The less he spoke the more he heard
Why aren’t we like that wise old bird

THE NORTH WIND DOTH BLOW
The North Wind doth blow
And we shall have snow,
And what will the poor Robin do then?
Poor thing.
He’ll sit in a barn,
And keep himself warm,
And hide his head under his wing,
Poor thing.

THERE WERE TWO BIRDS SAT ON A STONE
There were two birds sat on a stone, Fa, la, la, la, lal, de:
One flew away and then there was one,
Fa, la, la, la, lal, de;
The other flew after, and then there was none,
Fa, la, la, la, lal, de;
And so the poor stone was left all alone, Fa, la, la, la, lal, de.

I SAW A SHIP A SAILING
I saw a ship a-sailing,
A-sailing on the sea,
And oh, but it was laden
With pretty things for thee!

There were comfits in the cabin,
And apples in the hold;
The sails were made of silk,
And the masts were all of gold.

The four-and-twenty sailors,
That stood between the decks,
Were four and twenty white mice
With chains about their necks.

The captain was a duck
With a packet on his back,
And when the ship began to move
The captain said, Quack, Quack!

GOOSEY, GOOSEY, GANDER
Goosey, goosey gander,
Whither shall I wander?
Upstairs and downstairs
And in my lady’s chamber.
There I met an old man
Who would not say his prayers
I took him by the left leg
And threw him down the stairs.

Here is a comment from someone from abroad.  It’s a nice little nursery rhymn.-

Hi Trisha,
There’s a comic somg about a Jay Bird – we used to sing it in Guides with actions:

Way down south not very far off
A jay bird died of the whooping cough
He whooped so hard with the whooping cough
That he whooped his tail and his feathers right off!

It’s sung over and over a few times (sitting on all fours) getting faster and faster and everytime whooping is sung you throw your arms in the air!

very impressed with your site!

I’d love to hear of any more nursery rhymns or poems about birds.

Early morning in January – a video

Posted on January 26th, 2009 in All My Videos by Trish

In early January it was  so cold and the ground was  frozen hard. No wonder I got a lot of birds at the feeders.

I took this short video of the countryside in winter in the early morning on 10th January.
There isn’t much food for birds in the countryside when the countryside is frozen like this.   The nights are freezing cold for them as well.

After I’d finished putting bird food out I was glad to get back inside.

Towards the end of this video a bird flys by – it was heading for the bird feeders.

Sparrowhawk in my Garden – Short Video

Posted on January 26th, 2009 in All My Videos by Trish

Last October I was trying to get a video of the sparrows round the feeder. As if by magic  all the sparrows flew away.

A second later this sparrowhawk flew in. I only caught it on camera for a few seconds.   Apologies for the video being short and not 100% clear, .

This  shows sparrows know when a predator is about.

I think it also shows that sparrowhawks do not only go for weak and ill birds

2009 RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

The 2009 RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 24 and 25 January

It’s simple to join in the Big Garden Birdwatch.

It only takes an hour of your time.

even  if you don’t have a garden you can birdwatch in a park or when you are going for a walk.
Make a note of the highest number of each type of bird you see.  Only record those that you see at any one time.  Only record the birds that land not the birds that are just flying by
There is an online form you can fill after you have finished the Big Birdwatch
Here is a link to the RSPB How To Take Part Website

A lot of bird numbers are declining and this yearly survey that can include you and me is used by the RSPB to get an overview of british birdlife – and we can be part of it.  Great isn’t it?

Have a good day

This was taken in June last year.

Sometimes in winter it’s nice to look back to a nice, long June day.

Snow in November – a short video

Posted on January 24th, 2009 in All My Videos by Trish

Freezing weather and snow makes it hard for birds to find food and water and makes it hard for them to survive. It was so cold when I took this video in November.

The wind blew the snow and covered the grass and feeders within a few hours.

Birds of Australia

Posted on January 23rd, 2009 in Bird Friends Around the World by Trish

I’ve got a bird photograph and a note from Australia about birds.

I’m really chuffed that Andrew, a family friend who lives on the outskirst of Brisbane has taken the time to tell me about the Australian birds and the area where he lives.

From the other side of the world Andrew has joined me on my blog and will share his interest in birds with us.  He’s got a lot of interesting information about the birds he sees and their habitats.

Here in England we are shivering in winter and birds are struggline to survive the short days and cold nights.  At the same moment in time in Australis birds are breeding.

From the other side of the globe to me in Andrew’s own words -

I have just seen some Double Barred Finches and they had a young one with them that had just left the nest.

Andrew goes on to say -

There are over 860 species in Australis and there is a large diversity in

  • Climate
  • Vegetation
  • Temperature

For those reasons there is a great deal of variety of birdlife

Within a very short distance of my house there are -

  • Wetlands
  • Beaches
  • Eucalyptus forest
  • Rainforest

So you can imagine the area is a hot spot for bird lovers.

Thanks Andrew.  All the best. Trisha

There will be some more from Andrew soon and anyone is welcome to contribute to – birds from abroad.

A Duck’s Prayer

Posted on January 23rd, 2009 in Poems and Nursery Rhymes about birds by Trish

Dear God,
give us a flood of water.
Let it rain tomorrow and always.
Give us plenty of little slugs
and other luscious things to eat.
Protect all folk who quack
and everyone who knows how to swim.

THE END

Isn’t that a funny little poem

We have had two ducks visiting the pond every year for ages.

They never seem to raise any ducklings but they are a welcome sight when they arrive.

I found this poem in a children’s book.

It is by Carmen Bernos de Gasztold (translated by Rumer Godden)

It reminds me of our two visiting ducks.
