Broken Nest Box
Oct 9th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
Nest box cleaning was underway a few days ago. A ladder to get to the bird boxes was needed.
We have four nest boxes on trees nearby. This one has broken and has an opening from the top to the bottom of it.
The ‘crack’ in the wood is about half an inch at the top. You can see the nesting material inside. I suppose a predator could get into this box and it should not be used again. The nesting material inside was dry. It’s a pity because it has been a good nest box
I looked out of my kitchen window this morning and saw a woodpecker ’sat’ on the birdtable! It took my breath away as it was so colourful.
At the moment I saw the woodpecker I had forgotten that woodpeckers can be predators
The birdtable is close to the nest box, so maybe had better take the nest box down to stop any would be predators getting an easy picking from this nest box.
Now is a good time to find out about and buy nest boxes

Hi Trish,
We have had some very persistant woodpeckers to our bird boxes in our garden. We have found the best way to deter them is to use metal hole protector to stop them enlarging the hole to get into the box. Another good idea is go for a nest box with camera. We got a bird box camera kit from Handykam. If there is any activity, we can then deter certain distructive birds before they create any damage.
Good luck in your quest to stop your woodpeckers damaging your birdboxes.

Hi Simon, nice to hear from you. Yes I should think the metal hole protector is a good idea. I may get two for the two nest boxes I have to put up.
I’m hoping to get a handykam for Christmas. (a nice toy for me at Christmas!). Will. hopefully put it in one of the new nest boxes. Hope I can figure out how it works. Trisha.
