Bird’s Hedge seems to be dying
Sep 18th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
I have a lot of birds use a garden hedge as shelter. They seem to use the branches to roost inside all year as it is an evergreen.
There is added shelter because at the back of the hedge is a fence. So the hedge and the fence combined give shelter.
I’ve made a one minute video of the hedge because I’m having problems with it.
Something is eating the leaves and damaging the hedge.
I do realise this could be the most boring video ever made. I’ll warn you before you click ‘play’ that all it shows is a hedge! A hedge in Yorkshire, but you can always enjoy the birdsong.
It is a laurel hedge and it is over 6ft tall.

I assume the pale patches are not patches of light. Have you looked underneath the leaves? By the looks of them something (many things) are having a feast. I’m assuming the pale patches are where some eggs were laid or where whatever has been nibbling the bush has covered itself over while it changes state. Apart from the missing bits most of the leaves still appear to be a healthy green

Hi John, Apologies for not replying sooner. I have read this note, but seem to have been busy feeding birds and sorting stuff out to reply
The pale patches are not patches of light. We have dark leaves and pale leaves. I think one is new growth and the other last years.
Yes it’s strange that a lot of the hedge is healthy - hope what ever it is doesn’t attack every leaf. Will look into it more myself. Cheers.
