BARREL SEED FEEDER FOR GARDEN BIRDS

This hanging bird feeder is -

• 12 inches tall

• Holds about 600 g of seed

• hangs freely from branches or a hook

This robust bird feeder has a

• large central food holder

• frame that deters squirrels and larger birds and so lets garden birds slip through the bars to feed.

• It is functional
• It has strong metal bars, base and top
• It is easy to fill

The metal bars keep squirrels out which is one reason I invested in this feeder as I have had a squirrel visit the feeders and bird table. It also keeps large birds out such as pigeons

The feed tube in the centre is shielded by a metal roof, bars and base.

BASE OF FEEDER

• The clear plastic tube is designed to let the bird seed flow onto the tray at the base of the feeder

• drainage holes in the tray help keep the tray dry.

TOP OF FEEDER -

The lid is a lift up lid and it is attached to the bird feeder with a small chain. I find chained on lids really useful as it is so easy to put a feeder lid down when filling a feeder and then not be able to find it.

The lid has a swivel lock on fastening which will make is nearly impossible for squirrels take the lid off.

HOW I TESTED THIS HANGING BARREL SEED FEEDER

I hung this bird feeder from a branch on a tree which meant it was sheltered from the bad weather. A variety of small garden birds used it.

Unfortunately I had to move the feeder out into the open as a crow clung to a branch, stretched it’s body out toward this feeder and put it’s beak through the bars. It managed to get the bird feed.

I have hung this feeder on an old washing line in the open to keep squirrels and crows and other large birds off the feeder

It is a good idea to have a feeder that gives protection to birds when they are feeding.

 You will find this feeder especially useful if you have problems with squirrels and larger birds. The cage is also a way to protect smaller birds from birds of prey.

PROS AND CONS 

The clear plastic feed tube which is central to this feeder has one opening at the base of the feeder. This means the whole transparant feed tube will keep the seed dry from the rain.

Produced in China - It would be nice if we could produce something similar here in Britain. I’m sure there’s such a lot of people who have the knowledge.
