Harvesting between the showers
Aug 23rd, 2008 by Birdy Trish
We finally managed to harvest the field of barley.
We had to leave one small corner because the rain started again.
It’s still raining and the ground is very wet and muddy. Usually at this time of year it’s dry and easy to walk on.
We still have fields of wheat to harvest. We are hoping the sun will come out.
The sun came out today and they have spent all day turning the straw so that it dried in the sun. Then the straw could be baled and the bales stored to keep them dry. In winter this straw would be used for bedding for our cows in winter.
This has not happened because as soon as they had turned the straw - it started to rain. So the straw will have to be turned again to make sure it is dry before it is baled.
That means a days work wasted because of the weather.
All because of a pint of milk! Enjoy your cup of tea!

Such a long and complicated chain to produce a pint of milk - hope the weather cheers up for the rest of your harvesting
Hi, Thanks Top Veg, I think the damage has already been done to the wheat crop that is waiting to be harvested. This rain has done the damage. The wheat will not be the highest quality because of the rain. The companies who buy the wheat from us will only give us a low price. We’ll see how it goes, but I’ve heard of one farmer who may not grow corn next year because you put one years effort into one crop and then you cannot make money. He says you cannot go on like that. We’ll see.
