Birdtable Graveyard
Aug 22nd, 2008 by Birdy Trish
I need a new birdtable.
I had a really good birdtable that lasted ages. Recently I had to replace it. I bought a reasonably priced sofwoood birdtable. Unfortunately this new birdtable is coming apart from the stand.
I need a stroang birdtable to see me through the winter as it gets really wet and windy here. I could try and nail the new bird table back together, but don’t think I will.
I’m going to start looking for a new birdtable.

That bird table is well and truly dead! The British weather isn’t kind to our bird accessories is it? Good luck in finding a new table.
Trish
Do you have a tree close to where you would have your bird table??
If so, take the top off the top bird table (in the picture) screw a 10mm chain (length to suit) on to the top and fix it from the tree.
Or, use the bird-tables you have as patterns, use the base of the top table (in photo) and the top of the bottom table (in photo) and you have an attractive bird table. treat it with Cuprinol, Ronseal or a similar preservative and away you go.
You could take some 300mm or 400mm lengths of 6mm dia steel bar (from B&Q or such) bend the top over by about 150 to 200mm, to form a hook and drive this in OVER the splayed legs of the bird-table support. This should anchor it down, through the worse winds.
Good Luck
Andy.
Bluebird, thanks for those good luck wishes.
Andy - What a good idea. One full bird table out of two bird tables and one hanging feeder. The anchor idea is good as well. At the moment I just tie birdtables to an old fence (and hope the fence doesn’t blow down!)
Will go and have a look tomorrow. Cheers.
Looking at the old birdtable in the photo it looks mostly OK. Also the post looks to be about 2inch square wood. If so get rid of the old legs, cut off any rotten wood from the bottom of the post. Beg, borrow or find a 2×2inch metpost. Drive that in the ground where you want the table. Put the birtable post in the metpost and you have a fixture which will stand just about any bad weather for many years to come. Remember to give the bottom of the wooden post some treatment to slow down the rot.

Hi Trish,
I have found a very effective way of anchoring the bird table is to use a pair of pliers to open up some metal coat hangers, bending them over the wooden struts at the base of the table and driving them into the ground. We live on top of a hill and get very strong winds and this has always worked for us.
Very best wishes,
Jan
Hi Jan, I’d never have thought of that. It’s another good idea. That’s something I could do myself.
I would never have thought of anchoring the base of a birdtable to the ground before I’d had all these tips.
So you must have similar problems to me with bird feeding. Strong winds blowing bird food off the table and out of the hanging feeding ports. I could go on. Thanks for getting in touch. Trish
Hi, Just thought I’d let you know I’ve taken the top of the bird table off the newest birdtable. Haven’t done anything else yet though. Will see what time we have. Am going to clean the actual bird table and paint it with something and then, as kindly suggested, am going to hang it from a branch or somewhere and still use it. Cheers. Trisha
