Harvest and Corn - 9th August
Aug 9th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
Last week I wrote this about harvesting the corn
Our corn was ready for harvesting. On the 31 July we managed to get a few hours of combining done.
We have not harvested any corn since the 31 July. The corn is ready but we are unable to harvest it because it has rained so much.
You can harvest corn that is damp, but if it is really wet it takes so much drying in the corn dryer and also it can make the corn dryer clog. A bit like the bird feeders clog when the water gets into them!
So there are two reasons it’s best not to use the corn dryer if the corn is really wet . 1. Oil costs a lot of money and it would put our expenses up. 2. It could easily clog the corn dryer and they (not me) would have to spend time going into the corn pit (with masks over our mouths and noses) to try and unclog it. If that did not work there would be the expense of repairing the corn dryer and if the corn dryer could not be repaired it would be out of action for the rest of the harvest.
The sun comes out. Then it rains. I make a pack up for my old man to take onto the combine. He never takes it because a thunderstorm has arrived.
I think we all know the harvest will not fail in England, but here on the Yorkshire Wolds is has stopped for 9 days because of bad weather.
Here are some photos I took yesterday
The bottom photograph shows just how much damage wind and rain can do.
