Bird Feeders and wet weather
Aug 1st, 2008 by Birdy Trish
I have a few different types of bird feeders in different areas of the garden.
Last night there was a thunderstorm. The rain battered on the windows and was really heavy rain. The thunder and lightening seemed to go on for ages.
I had left all but one of the bird feeders out last night. This morning I really thought the two hanging seed feeders hanging undercover on the branches of a tree would have rain in the feeding ports and be clogged up. I was wrong. These two bird feeders were bone dry. The area under the branches was sheltered and dry.
This just shows how much shelter that trees and hedges can provide.
The bird table this is inside the front garden hedge was safe and dry as well. None of the torrential rain had managed to reach it. The combination of a hedge near a fence means the hedge gives a lot of shelter. No wonder a lot of birds use this hedge.

I left my ground feeder outside. I’d taken the mesh cage away from the actual ground feeder. When I went outside the rain seemed to have actually cleaned the mesh.
The rain has stopped now and the sun is shining. I’ve filled all the feeders, put cheese, apple and grated carrot on one birdtable, inside the meshed feeder and under a hedge. I’ve thrown some old bread (soaked in water) onto the grass. So now the garden is alive with birds.
Does anyone know which birds eat grated carrot. I was given this tip about a month ago and am always surprised when I see the grated carrot has gone, but never see which bird eats it.
