Corn and Harvest - week 5
Jul 31st, 2008 by Birdy Trish
The day has arrived. Since planting the corn we have been waiting for this day. The corn is ready.
So harvest was here today for two or three hours. Then it rained.
But an hour or two ago the combine had roared into action.
Everyone knew what jobs they had to do.
The corn has to be dry to harvest it. If the corn is too wet it won’t combine well. It also costs a lot to put the corn through the corn dryer to get it to an acceptable level to sell it. The companies who buy the corn put a high standard on what they want - farmers have to grow and sell corn according to what the buyer wants.
Look at the colour of the corn just 4 weeks ago. It’s changed from green to golden yellow
Even though it’s summer birds still need feeding. Research has found that feeding birds in summer gives birds (young and inexperienced birds especially) a good start. If birds are healthy and well fed in summer this health and fitness helps them survive the winter.
We are harvesting now and this corn will be stored, kept and used until next harvest. We don’t have to think where our next meal will be coming from. So the least we can do is help our wild feathered friends who have no safety net in their life. Pop a bit of bird food (and water) out every day. that’s all it takes.
