Puffins UK
Jul 26th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
It is goodbye to the young puffins at Bempton Cliffs, Bridlington as they will soon be leaving their nests high on the cliffs and heading out to sea.
Today thousands of chicks are nesting on the ledges of Bempton Cliffs. Some instinct tells them it will soon be time to leave their high cliff nests. They are ruled by the seasons and by their instincts.
I think it’s strange that that these silly looking birds know when it is time to leave and they all know to leave at the same time. These birds are flying into the great unknown and just trust their instinct.
So while I’m writing this Puffins are getting ready to leap of the cliffs to the sea 400 ft below.
They then head out to see to joint the guillemots. It sounds like party time out at sea.
The RSPB organisers have arranged a final puffin patrol, on Sunday 27th July from 6pm until 7.30pm.
The RSPB Reserve at Bempton is a special place the special viewing platforms along the cliff mean you can have a safe viewing area to look at all the birds, or look out to sea or to look down at the sheer cliff and at the beach 400 feet below. There is also a cliff top walk.
I was thinking - garden birds leave their nests and as fledgings learn about feeding and survival in an area near their nests. For a young bird, such as a puffin,, that has never flown before to leave their nests and head out to sea not knowing what is out there is an amazing thing.
There is such an amazing variety of birds in the UK. They range from the shy wren that spends a lot of its time scurrying about in bushes to the young Puffins that just sets off out to sea without a backward glance.

The chalk cliffs that start at Flamborough and Bempton are the beginning of the Yorkshire Wolds
The Yorkshire Wolds is the area where I live. The Yorkshire Wolds sweeps from these cliff tops to The Humber Estuary at Hessle. Here is some more information about the Yorkshire Wolds
