Bird Feeding early in the morning
Jul 11th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
Have been out early putting food out for the garden birds. This morning there is a soft drizzle of rain. During the night the rain has been more severe but this morning there is a freshness to the day.
I’ve mixed together some currants, grated cheese, grated carrot, half a cut up peeled apple, quaker oats. I did not coat it with fat as I didn’t have time.
I put some of this home made mix on the bird table, some in the covered ground feeder and threw some under the fruit bush.
I never used to think of putting out grated carrots or quaker oats for my garden birds. It’s only because visitors to birdtable news have told me what they put in their home bird food mix.
The grated carrot always seems to be eaten. This surprises me. I’ve never seen it written in any bird book.
I also had another good piece of advice keeping big birds away from feeders. I’m trying it at the moment.
Any stale bread, leftover food and some bird food I put out on the grass at the front of the house away from most of the bird feeders. The rooks and crows that come into the garden now seem to head for that area and I don’t see as many near the feeders. But it could also be because I have invested in a caged peanut feeder, hung the bird feeders in a different place and put wire round the bird table to keep them away.
This morning it has mainly been the bird song that I have heard. It seems extra loud this morning.
Have put the bird mix out in the feeders. I put millet in one feeder and sparrows were queuing for that this morning.
It’s peaceful being in the garden early in the morning.
You don’t need a garden to put food out though. I bought a window feeder a few weeks ago and haven’t put it up yet. It has some very strange instructions. It says I have to ‘rub my nose’ and clean my windows. But more of that when I get round to putting it up.
Why have I bought another bird feeder when I have so many already?
It is also a good idea to go on any RSPB guided walks or visit RSPB sites. This is if you have a garden or not.
Have a good day

Have never tried Quaker Oats so I’ll give that idea a try.
Do you put them out dry - straight out of the box?
John
Hi John, I’ve found out you feed them dry. Problem is that if the oats get wet it seems they are bad for birds - so best not put them out on a rainy day!
Have you ever fed birds cooked, cold pasta?
