PREVIEW PRIOR TO THE PRODUCT REVIEW
I have had this bird feeder since before I started my blog. I have used it with and without the seed tray.
I cannot remember where I bought it. It has stood the test of time for me and is still for sale today - so there must be more satisfied customers.
NEW GENERATION SEED FEEDER (DROLL YANKEE) PRODUCT REVIEW
This feeder is squirrel resistant
This feeder comes in 3 sizes:
- Small feeder: 7″ high with 2 port holes for feeding and holds 250g of bird seed
- Medium seed feeder: 14″ high with 4 port holes and holds 500g of bird seed
- Large feeder: 21″ tall with 6 feeding ports and holds 750g of bird seed
As you can see from this photograph of my Droll Yankee bird feeder it is a hanging feeder with a strong alloy top, base and feeding ports.
All the feed flows to the feeding ports. The feeding ports are well designed to protect the bird seed from the rain.
Has a screw on the base where a seed tray could be used. Below are two photographs taken last year when I used the seed tray. It was very useful to have. Because of squirrels and crows balancing on the seed tray and getting all the food I had to take it off.

PROS AND CONS
This Droll Yankee Seed Feeder is sturdily built and will last a long time.
I dropped it once (without the seed tray) and the only thing that broke was one of the bottom perches at the feeder port.
In torrential rain the feeder portholes do, of course, get wet and seed can clog in the portholes.
RESULT
I have taken this feeder for granted over the years. It is one of the feeders that I fill up every day - sometimes twice a day.
I have hung this feeder in various places in my garden over the years and have fed a lot of birds from it in summer, spring autumn and winter. At the moment I am putting this Bird Food into the feeder
This feeder would suit someone who is starting out in feeding birds as well as the seasoned bird feeder. Using a good bird seed mix will attract a variety of birds.
I have seen sparrows, chaffinches and blue tits near the fence , queing to feed from the feeder while other birds are perched on it and feasting.

Hi Trish,
I have a similar looking feeder which I have recently put back into use. It was never popular here for some reason and is still being avoided this time. I filled it a couple of weeks ago with the same mixture I am using elsewhere and it is still full. Fussy little blighters, birds! Other feeders, including a new one, are in full use.
I have noticed that generally the birds seem less fussy about what sort of seed is put out here at the moment. Maybe the recent cooler damp weather has reduced their natural supply of insects.
I bought a sack of cheap birdseed which is full of corn type seed which the smaller birds normally throw out but this last couple of weeks there are only husks left on the birdtable which only allows starlings and smaller birds to enter and its mainly sparrows at the moment.

Hi John. I’ve noticed that the birds seem ‘frantic’ for food especially on a morning. I’ve wondered if they were becoming lazy in their search for food. But I think you are right the cooler damp weather won’t be very good for them. And there has been a lot of rain here lately. I know the other year the bad weather meant that a lot of blue tits didn’t survive.
Isn’t it strange that the birds avoid one bird feeder and go to another. I had a lady ask why birds did not visit her bird table - there isn’t really an answer but there are a lot of possibilities.
