Birdtables - where to put them
Jun 4th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
I’ve had two different bits of advice about bird tables.
One person said put the birdtable near a hedge. Birds can dodge sparrowhawks etc if they are in a hedge. Do not put a bird table out in the open as a bird of prey has a clear view and can strike easily.
The second person said - Put your bird table out in the open. the garden birds have a clear all round view if you do that.
Which do you think is right

Far better to put it out in the open, for two reasons. Cats will hide in bushes and hedges anticipating the birds’ visits and will pounce. The second reason is, all sorts of detritus from said shrub or bush will fall onto the bird table.
Birds need to be able to see all around them. The added bonus is that you can see them clearly too, which should provide some good photo opps for you
