Empty Bird’s Nest
Jun 1st, 2008 by Birdy Trish
This morning I found a new born chick dead on the garden path.
We call a new born chick a ‘golly’ This chick had no feathers and would be totally dependent on it’s parents. There is no way it could have got out of the nest itself. There wasn’t a nest nearby.
This newly born chick had had it’s life taken away. It will never grow and fledge. Never be taught to come to my feeders, never have it’s first flight.
What took this chick from its nest. I know magpies can fly through a hedgerow and take eggs and young chicks. Squirrels do too (I think).
I don’t mean squirrels ‘fly through a hedgerow’. I mean squirrels take eggs and young chicks.
There is a lot of activity and noise at the bird feeders, but somewhere there is an empty nest and silence.
Is it bird eating bird again.
It may be all sunshine and light in my garden but there is a side to wildlife that will always be hidden from us.
What do you make of it all?
