Crows - reason why I need covered bird feeders
May 26th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
I took these photos of crows at our garden pond. They seemed so at home there. I could have screamed. They are so big when you see a sparrow nearby.
Excuse the pond, but the plastic liner is showing, We get loads of birds at this pond. Will have to try and get some video of it.
I put out a lot of bird food for the small garden birds, and use a variety of bird feeders. I live six miles from a shop and so I order on line and get my garden bird ’stuff’ delivered.
Crows and rooks have learnt how to get food from the peanut feeder, how to cling onto the bird table and get the food, how to perch on the seed feeder and put their beaks into the feeders. I’m slowly outwitting them with a variety of methods, putting string and wire round a bird table is one way. I’ve bought a new peanut feeder. Surely if the large birds can’t get at the food they will stop coming.
Wonder what crow pie tastes like.
I never talk about how much bird feeding costs, but I think my old man must know I spend a bit on bird food as he can’t escape the 3 large bins in the back porch that I use to keep a variety of bird food in (they are black dustbins that I have only ever used for bird food). I keep individual small bags of bird food in one bin and large bags in another.
I used to throw bird food onto an open tables.
I only have one open table now and I throw scraps onto that. I save my ’secure’ table for putting bird seed on.
It’s easy to buy and browse on line. If you’re interested just click the Garden Birds Supplies link. Any commission I make I am going to use to buy more bird boxes. I would like to buy some more birdboxes as we have the space.
Am having someone come to give me advice sometime this summer. I’m keeping notes about what birds have come to the garden, this will help him choose what type of bird boxes would be best suited.
Have a good day and just be thankful you’re not surrounded by rooks and crows.
I have had a lot of garden birds visit as well, sparrows by the bucketful, chaffinches, blackbirds and thrushes. Not just one or two, but a variety flitting about.

I’m looking for ways to keep the crows out of my birdfeeders. You mention about string or wire on round a bird table. Not sure what you mean by this. The crows get on my feeders and with their beaks push the seed they don’t like aside to get to the seed they do like. Hence, most of the birdseed is on the ground (and sprouting). The smaller birds are usually chased away by the crows. Help!!
