My New Bird Table Episode 2
Apr 26th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
I chose my new bird table carefully.
It has a low roof and ‘arches’ on the bird table that meant that the problem of large birds such as rooks taking over my bird table would be solved.
Here’s a link to a photo of a rook on my hanging feeder. They took over the bird table as well. I was so fed up of them. Link to photo of rook
I knew my new bird table would solve the problem of rooks at my bird table
My brand new, clean bird table -
You can see the arches that will keep the rooks off.
A few days later my new bird table looks like this -
The rooks outwitted me.
I could not get a photo of the rooks, but they managed to balance on the wooden ledge and put their large beaks onto the table. They hoovered up the bird food in a matter of minutes. I found some old wire and string to encase the bird table.
I’m pleased to say that I have now won the battle of the bird table and the rooks keep off.
I do have pigeons and doves though.
This problem has made me think I need to rethink all my bird feeding.
Maybe I need to invest in some special wire meshed birdtables and bird feeders.
I don’t like to think how much money I spend on bird food each week and although quite a few sparrows, blue tits, chaffinches, thrushes do come to the feeders every day I am always fighting against the larger birds.
If I invested in bird feeders with guards that may be the answer.
