Birds and birds nests
Apr 18th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
There is a flurry of activity around our hedgerows and in the garden.
Birds are busy building nests and finding nesting materials.
It’s strange how each type of birds builds a different type of nest. Here’s three different birds that build different type nests.
THE WREN
The wren is the smallest common bird. It is only 3 1/2 inches long. It weighs only about the same as an ordinary envelope.
Wrens build lovely little nests shaped like a ball with a hole in the side. It is usually close to the ground and very well hidden.
LONG TAILED TITS
Long Tailed Tits like places where there are gorse and thorne bushes.
The nest is shaped like a bottle and made of moss and wool, hair and cobwens and is lined with hundreds of feathers.
The Long Tailed Tit gets into the nest and shapes it by turning round and round. It presses the feathers flat with its breast.
Then they put a rooF on the nest and a tiny doorway is made in the side of the nest.
THE GOLDFINCH
The Goldfinch is a brilliantly coloured little bird. It likes to live in gardens and orchards.
The Goldfinch’s nest is almost always built near houses and is usually put near the end of a thin branch at a good height.
A nest in the shape of a ball. A nest in the shape of a bottle. A nest at the end of a branch.
No wonder the garden is a hive of activity.
Better refill the bird feeders and bird tables. I’ll also put out some kitchen scraps. I find that a get a flurry of activity at the bird feeders in the late afternoon
