Bird Table - the reason why birds are not using it
Apr 11th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
Yesterday I was asked if I could think why birds were not taking food off the garden birdtable yet the garden itself was full of birds. I could not think of a concrete answer.
I have asked an elderly countryman what he thinks the reason is that birds visit the garden but do not go near the bird table which is full of food.
He’s lived in the countryside all his life and is very knowledgeable.
He is certain there is a predator in or near the garden.
It could be a sparrowhawk. It could be a cat.
Sparrowhawks can gets birds off a bird table easy as a wink when the bird table is out in the open. Sparrowhawks are like lightening
When birds are on a birdtable that is out in the open they have no where to dodge so they stay away from the birdtable.
If the birdtable is near a bush or hedge there is shelter and somewhere for the birds to dodge and try to escape the sparrowhawk.
predator - no doubt about it.
It’s the way of wildlife - they live off one an other.
