Rooks eating bird food from my feeder
Apr 3rd, 2008 by Birdy Trish
Bird tables and bird feeders attract birds of all sorts and sizes.
I put out a lot of bird food for the garden birds. I don’t want to see it wasted.
Especially at this time of year when birds are busy breeding I want the bird food to be used by garden birds.
I put out sunflower hearts because a lot of garden birds love them
I also use peanuts. Click this link to see some of the reasons I feed peanuts
I hung my hanging bird feeder onto a fence to stop it blowing in the wind. But it has stabalised the feeder and made it possible for a rook to cling onto it.
Goodness knows how many days the rooks been feeding from it withou me seeing it. I aren’t going to use my credit card to feed rooks.
Here are some photos of what’s been happening.
First of all here’s a sparrow watching helplessly.
I’ll put all the other photos as the small size. Just click on photo if you want to see a larger version of the photograph
Here’s what the sparrow is looking at -
Here are two close up photos of the rook so you can see how easily it would empty a feeder and take all the garden birds food
I’ve solved the problem by stringing an old wire from tree to tree and hanging the bird feeder from it. This meant the hanging bird feeder didn’t stabalise and the rooks won’t be able to get at the food (photos to follow).
It was annoying having to do that. Messing about with wire and trees. Then it took a few days for the garden birds to find the new position of the feeder (even though it was only a few feet away from the place where I used to put it!). They would sit in a line on the top of the fence looking down at where the feeder used to be. Then they would look at each other. Then they would look down at where the feeder used to be.
What a lot of trouble just because of a rook.
I do realise you won’t have this probem. Just keep feeding the birds. Please ask for any advice. I don’t know everything by a long way but we can have fun learning together.
