Ducks make themselves at home in a town

Ducks in town?
I was in a seaside town the other day in East Yorkshire when a movement on the edge of a car park caught my eye
It was a really busy area. At the other side of the wall was a busy road.
Then I saw duck number one being joined by duck number two -
It was lucky I had my camera with me. These two ducks were used to people passing by on the road and so weren’t bothered as I walked by.
I took a few photos and most of them weren’s any good. This is the best photo I manage to get -
For years we’ve had two ducks visit the farm pond. They never seem to bring up any young. We hear their quacking and see glimpses of them but I would never be able to get as close to them as I have these ‘town ducks’. Click here to read about our farm ducks and to read a ‘duck poem‘
We also get moorhens visiting the farm pond. I have never seen moorhens and ducks on the pond at the same time. Does anyone know if one chases the other away?
Last year I heard about some plastic ducks that were giving information about ocean currents - August 2007 Plastic Ducks and Ocean Currents
The ducks went overboard 15 years ago and have been monitored since then so that scientists can track ocean currents. I haven’t heard of any actually being blown to our shores, but it’s a really interesting story - unbelievable really. But it is true.
Don’t forget to feed the birds. If you scroll down to the bottom of this post you will see how to coat your bird seed with fat without making it into a fatball. Birds need fat for energy.
