Is there an owl in our Barn Owl Nest Box?

We want to help the barn owls. The year 2006 was a bad year for Barn Owls. This is one reason why in 2007 we put up a barn owl nest box.
In June 2007 there was movement in the nest box and we thought there was an owl there. We were over the moon. We were so pleased there was a Barn Owl nesting. Then we found out that
We put up with the disappointment and still wanted to help the Barn Owls
We were told that we should clean the barn owl nest box out. This would mean that a Barn Owl would overwinter in the Barn Owl Nest Box. So in October 2007 we cleaned out the Barn Owl Nest Box
The saga continues. Winter has come and gone. We see a barn owl flying nearby but the Nest Box looks deserted. How can you tell if there is anything in a Barn Owl Nest Box. It’s so high up on a tree. We can’t get a ladder and peep inside. Everytime we go by we don’t see a thing.
I really wish there was a wise old owl we could ask!
I think I’ll just give up and let nature decide.
