A Breeding Pair of Blackbirds in my garden?
Mar 15th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
Blackbirds in my garden eat a lot of the bird food I put out.
I’ve just mentioned in another diary entry that the blackbirds stay at the ground feeder and hop around at their leisure.
I also like taking photographs. I have my first digital camera which was a mystery to me at first. After going on two courses I finally found out how easy they are to use.
I’ve been snapping away in the knowledge that I can delete the photos later on if they aren’t any good (I do delete a lot of them).
The birds don’t fly away as quickly now when I appear (I wonder why). I think birds and dogs know when food is about to appear. But that is another story.
Last week I took a lot of photos in my garden and chose two good photos to show you. One day I may but all my bad photos out on show. All the photos of bare branches and empty bird tables - where the birds have flown away just as I pointed the camera at them!
I chose one photo because I wasn’t sure what type of bird was in the photo. I thought if I asked then I would get an answer. The answer is that it is an adult female blackbird in the photo.
The second photo is definitely of an adult male blackbird.
I could have a pair of breeding blackbirds in my garden.
They will hatch a brood of young blackbirds and bring the youngsters to my bird table. Where will this bird feeding end? Next year, (hopefully?) I will have more blackbirds come to my feeder.
Here are the two photos.
This is the male blackbird. It is easy to spot because of it’s yellow beak.
Here is the second bird. When I took the photo I wasn’t sure if it was a thrush or a blackbird. It is a female blackbird
As you can see from the photos the blackbirds are both sitting in the same hedge.
I don’t know why one photo is clear and the other is not so clear. It could be the setting I used when I tried taking photos of the blackbirds.
Here are what the original photos were about
If you are wondering what bird food to put out. Blackbirds and other birds like this bird food
Last year I was thinking of stopping putting bird food out because I was fed up with squirrels. Then I saw a blackbird in the garden it cheered me up and I changed my mind. I decided to keep on putting bird food out.
Nature is harsh. A week later in a country lane I saw a Crow eating a blackbird
I suppose all we can do is feed the birds and let nature take it’s own course.

Hi Pamela, Thought I’d reply here as well.
It’s as though you’ve got blackbird pets to look after.
It’s good we can help wildlife. And it’s good the blackbirds feel secure enough to tell you what to do!
thanks for telling me about this. If you have any photos or want to have a bird chat again please do.
