Birds - which feeder works best for you?
Mar 6th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
I’ve just got a new bird feeder.
It got me wondering how you bring birds into your yard or garden.
Which feeders work best for you?
Send a note about why the feeder works well and what birds it attracts, then we can arrange for you to send a photo of your favourite feeder.
I’d love to hear about different bird feeders and the birds they attract. Bird feeding is a solitary hobby so it would be good to look at your bird feeders while I was having a coffee.

Hi,
I left a comment before about my problems with pigeons, squirrels and the bird table I was using. I replaced this with a feeder which is basically a pole with brackets off it to hang peanut feeders etc. (can’t find a picture on the Internet). Unbelievably the squirrels and pigeons have still managed to get to the food but I’ve added a few deterrents (mesh, grease on the pole), so the problem isn’t as bad. I’m getting a lot of birds to it: robins, blue tits, great tits. We also had two greenfinches the other morning. I also put some food on the grass for the two dunnocks (I think) and various blackbirds. I spotted a wren a few weeks back but there’s been no sign since. Overall, not bad for a garden in South East London! Hopefully I’ll get a picture of them all in action soon.
Hi Dave,
It’s amazing how squirrels and pigeons manage to get to food. I think it’s a good idea to put grease on the pole.
You meant you put mesh on the pole didn’t you? You didn’t mean you put extra mesh over the bird feeders did you?
So pleased you’re getting birds to the food. Aren’t birds colourful. robins, blue tits and great tits add such colour. I like the plain sparrows and dunnocks as well.
I know what you mean about dunnocks. I think they are strange little birds. don’t know why. I think sometimes I get them mixed up with sparrows. Glad you have a wren. I see one sometimes lurking about. Shy little creatures aren’t they. I think it’s great that everyone can feed the birds. Here I am in the middle of the countryside and there you are in a city and we can both feed the birds. If you do get a photo I’d love to see it. I like trying to take photos. I had to go on a course to sort my camera out though! Good to hear from you again. Trisha.
