Sunflower seeds for birds.
Feb 24th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
Have had a comment about plants that birds eat. It’s given me an idea to plant some of the sunflower seeds -
Last year I grew some sunflowers and left them to go to seed. I never actually managed to see any birds on them as they were right at the bottom of the garden almost hidden from sight but once the seeds had ripened it didn’t take many days for the seeds to gradually disappear.
This year I shall grow some more as there is a plentiful supply of ‘free’ seeds in the bird food!
Also I will have some nearer the bungalow so I can see who actually collects and eats them.
Good idea to put them near the house - kitchen windows are good bird viewing areas!
Hi Trisha,
Hey thanks for the comments on my website. Yes water is crucial to almost every thing and every one, including birds. My home office has a window that overlooks a large grapevine. I am not an expert on birds but I know that I am very entertained by all the birds that visit that spot. Some recent visitors have been a group of woodpecker. They are such beautiful birds. The first time I noticed them was in response to a knock knock knock. I suspected a woodpecker but did could not see it from the yard. Then I saw a group of them on the grapevine. Absolutely beautiful. It happened again a few day’s later, so I went out on the deck and looked on the roof and there he was peck, peck, pecking on the roof. So I said, “Hey quit pecking on my roof”, and he flew away. I wasn’t too thrilled about the pecking, but I haven’t heard it again. So hopefully all is well, and he got the point. Do birds understand English? Other than this minor complication I love watching the birds. This is not so much in regards to your sunflower seeds topic as much as to just the pure beauty of birds. I also see Quail in my yard quite often with their little families. The parents walk around the yard with the young ones trailing behind. It is the cutest thing. They walk in single file. I will try and get a photo of it this spring. Do you have quail where you are? Joanie Trout
