A Tip when buying a nest box
Feb 12th, 2008 by Birdy Trish
Nest boxes are important to many birds as it is their safe haven for bringing up their family.
It is National Nest Box week from 14 to 21 February and you may be thinking of buying a nest box.
I thought I would tell you that it is important you don’t buy a nest box that has a perch outside the entrance as this gives footholds to predators who think birds make a tasty meal.
Garden birds have many predators
- Squirrels
- Woodpeckers
- Magpies
- Cats
They are all after eggs or young birds and know a bird box is a good place to catch a tasty meal
So don’t buy nest boxes with ornamental windows, chimneys and other types of perches.
Remember -
DO NOT BUY A NEST BOX THAT HAS A PERCH OUTSIDE THE ENTRANCE.
A basic wooden nest box is fine.
