Moorhens - where are they?
Jan 23rd, 2008 by Birdy Trish
Have our moorhens been eaten by foxes? Poor Maisie Moorhen if this has happened
This summer for the first time we had two moorhens at the farm pond and I called one Maisie, in the end they were all Maisie.
They raised some young moorhens on this pond. The young moorhens were shy and timid until they realised they were safe at the pond and near the garden. Then Maisie’s young brood began to investigate and often came along the ground under the hedge. They then found a way into our garden and then found a way inside the meshed ground feeder to get at the food - only because I left the ground feeder door open so the blackbirds could get in.
The moorhens became a bit like our farm hens in the way they wandered about the garden.
But where is Maisie and all the other family of moorhens all now?
Does anyone know if moorhens migrate locally to other ponds?
Our farm pond is empty and quiet. I haven’t seen any moorhens for about two months. Where there was a splash and a flurry of water when we walked by now there is silence. I even miss not seeing them in the garden.
The only thing we can think of is that a fox has got them.
Hope not. If anyone has any knowledge of moorhens please let me know and maybe we can solve the puzzle.
We were so pleased when we realised we had moorhens at the farm
Moorhens and Ducks plus a bit more
Moorhen inside my meshed ground feeder - I’d left the door open!
I’ve put this photo of a moorhen at the end because it’s not a very good one. Can you spot the Moorhen?
