For the bird and also for the bird feeder using straight seeds instead of bird seed mixes gives new opportunities.
You can set out to attract new species by using a seeds like nyjer and millet as a single feed and not mixed with other bird seed.
Millet: Has a good food to energy ratio. It is a food loved by sparrows.
Photo of Millet that I use every day
Sunflower hearts. Loved by all songbirds. No waste and no discarded sunflower shells to clean up afterwards. The lack of waste makes sunflower hearts a value for money buy.
Black sunflower Black sunflower is a high energy food. It has a softer shell than traditional sunflower. It is a lot easier for smaller birds to open and will attract a larger variety of birds.
Nyjer
A real delicacy. Loved by siskins, finches and many other small songbirds. Nyjer is usually unattractive to squirrels and large birds. Can be mixed with black sunflower for a popular and economic bird food combination.
Squirrels and larger birds find Nyjer unattractive. For this reason Nyjer is attractive to me as I have problems with Squirrels and larger birds
Hemp
An ideal seed for the birdtable. Much loved by greenfinches, bullfinches, nunuthatches, buntings and woodpeckers. This seed should be kept dry.
