Hanging Birdfeeder Birds
Nov 27th, 2007 by Birdy Trish
Many birds are used to eating fruit and berries that grow at the ends of branches and twigs. So it’s easy to attract birds to the garden by putting out hanging bird feeders.
Birds you are most likely to see on a hanging bird feeder are:
- Blue Tit
- Great Tit
- Coal Tit
- Long Tailed Tit
- Great Spotted Woodpecker
- Greenfinch
- Sisken
Other birds you will see who are a little less agile on the hanging bird feeders are:
- Chaffinch
- Goldfinch
- House Sparrow
- Starling (I’ve seen them really try to hang onto a bird feeder)
- Tree Sparrow
House Sparrows are not as agile on bird feeders but they hang on and manage to get at the bird food inside the feeder.
- Rook!
I have seen a rook successfully cling onto a hanging feeder that was full of fat balls! The rook was so heavy it weighed the branch down but it hung on. It was swaying and clinging on so easily. It’s large beak easily got through to a fat ball and demolished one in minutes.
I put a variety of bird food into my hanging bird feeders.
- Bird Seed Mix especially for hanging feeders
- Peanuts
- Fat balls
- Millet ( This is a very small seed and needs a special feeder but the birds love it)
