How to keep unwanted birds away
Nov 21st, 2007 by Birdy Trish
At the end of this note there’s a photo of the meripac ground feeder that I use. It’s really great for keeping moorhens, rooks, crows, partridges, jackdaws and farm hens away from my bird seed mix because they can’t get through the wire mesh. When those birds are all in the same area at the same time (they come to look for food) they look amusing. I call them The Odd Bods.
The sparrows, wrens and blue tits all flit in and out of the feeder like there’s no tomorrow. Haven’t been able to get a photo though.
I really like using this feeder. The trouble is that some birds I want to help and attract to my garden such as the thrush and the blackbird, can’t use get through the wire of this meshed feeder either. Nothing is ever simple is it?
I’ve tried leaving the door open but the starlings, pigeons, partridges and …..( need I go on) always find the open door and climb inside. The thrush and the blackbird haven’t sussed it out yet. I see them hopping round and trying to get at the feed and I want to scream at them ‘I’ve left the door open for you’. I’m not mad - promise
The main thing is that all the bird seed I use isn’t getting scavenged by The Odd Bods
