Blue Tit Fact Sheet
Nov 17th, 2007 by Birdy Trish
Spurred on by the fact that Blue Tit’s have not had a good year I have been putting together a Fact Sheet.
Name of Bird: Blue Tit
Latin Name: Cyanistes caeruleus (or Parus caeruleus)
Feeding:
Feed at the bird table and on the peanut feeder all year round.
Insects such as caterpillars and beetles and spiders
In the Autumn Blue Tits also feed on berries.
In Spring Blue Tits also feed on pollen, nectar and sap
As they feed their young on caterpillars if the weather is cold and wet and the caterpillars do not coincide with the Blue tits breeding time then the Blue tit population will decrease because many fledglings will die.
So the Blue Tit destroys garden pests. It eats coccids and aphids which are bad for many plants.
Description:
Colourful Blue and Yellow plumage.
Bright blue wings, tail and crown.
White cheeks.
Black eyestripe, bib and collar.
Black strip down the middle of the breast.
Bill is black.
Legs are blue grey
A very agile bird. Use their acrobatic ability to get at food from hanging bird feeders and in doing this they unknowingly give a very interesting and amusing display.
Habitat: Hedgerows, parks, deciduous and mixed woodland.
Song: tseee-tseee, tsu-hu-hu-hu-hu
Eggs: White with reddish spots. Incubation 13-15 days. Fledge at 16 -22 days
Nest: feathers, woold, hair, moss. Will use a tree hole, nest box, hole in wall
Size: 11 cm
Predators
I only found out yesterday that squirrels prey on birds such as blue tits. Great Spotted Woodpeckers do as well.
We have a squirrel and a Woodpecker near our bird tables and feeders.
