How to stop bird seed falling to the ground
Nov 12th, 2007 by Birdy Trish
Hi folks
I was right trimmed I’d managed to stop bird feed falling to the ground from my feeder by attaching a tray to the bottom of the feeder. The seed now falls into the tray and not onto the floor where the farm hens and wild pheasants used to eat it.
This means there is more seed for my garden birds as the seed is caught in the tray. Or so I thought.

What I hadn’t banked on was the thug of a squirrel using the tray as a seat to sit on while eating the bird food. The little blighter is such a pest.
I have a good view through my kitchen window and I can see that when the squirrel appears the birds disappear.
I have a strange feeling this thug of a squirrel will be nearly impossible to get rid of.
Looking back to last year 2006 was a carefree time where birdfeeding was concerned. I thought I had trouble with the rooks, crows, jackdaws, pheasants and pigeons but this squirrel is worse than any of them.
Last year I was able to put some apple and cheese out on the grass for the thrushes, blackbirds and often sparrows. But now the squirrel is on the grass as well.
I aren’t going to let it eat all my bird food though. I’ll beat it somehow.
