Squirrels, rooks, moorhens and garden birds
Nov 6th, 2007 by Birdy Trish
Hi, I had to be outside early this morning. I was filling the bird feeders up before the birds had woken from their hedgerow slumbers. It’s nice to provide bed and breakfast to a variety of garden birds. They’ll hop out of the hedge and onto the bird feeders.
It’s when the squirrel, rooks and crows arrive that I get fed up. The squirrel is here nearly every day. It’s a pest. It shouldn’t be here. It’s eating the birdfood. How can I stop it?
I know I’ve told you before that we have moorhens at our small farm pond. The original two moorhens have raised some chicks and have they have all taken over the pond. Now two mallard ducks have joined them on this pond. It will be a little crowded on the water! Lets hope they all get on.
Will try and get some photos of the ducks, but it’s difficult. I’ve noticed that the moorhens are becoming more like farm chickens in that they walk and wander about the path and the lawn with confidence. It’s a far cry from when they first arrived - they were shy little creatures hiding in the long grass all the time. This means, hopefully, I’ll be able to get some photos of the moorhens (Some people call them waterhens).
Moorhens, ducks and garden birds. A bit of variety there.
Must go now. Have a nice day. Trisha.

Good morning Trisha ,just found you through” farming friends “blog .love your postings and have told my daughter of “The kittens mother blog” so she can have a look .we are finding it difficult to see much wild life at the moment as we are in temp accomadation in town and very near a main road but we are hoping to move soon and have a garden again .we have been putting plants and fruit trees in tubs so that we can have a start with garden and encourage the birds. kathyann (meg’s mum’s muffin’s )
Hi kathyann, Nice to meet you. Really glad you got in touch. One reason I started this blog about birds is so people who don’t see many birds can join in and have a look. I think you are lucky living in a town near shops - my nearest shop is 6 miles away. And birds live in towns and cities as well as the countryside.
Maybe you could get one birdfeeder and put some bird food in and see what happens. Bill Oddie lives in a town and look what he knows and sees.
I belong to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the magazine that comes is brill. There’s a good section for younger people. Don’t know how old your daughter is but she might be interested.
Am planning to put a story into my blog about birds and animals sometime soon - hope you see it and let me know what you think. Best . Trisha.
