Birds in a garden not eating the bird food
Nov 1st, 2007 by Birdy Trish
A few weeks ago I was talking to a very nice lady who was telling me that she put food out for wild birds - but not one bird came to get the food!
She did say there had been building work going on in the area. That could be the reason.
Here we have tractors all day and cars come and go but we still get birds, birds and more birds. This morning I was about 4 foot from a bird in a hedge. I moved out of the way to let a car go by and the bird did not flinch or move, it kept on eating fruit from the hawthorn bush. So neither me or the car bothered this bird.
I have been puzzled by her problem of lack of birds and I have thought of two possible reasons why the birds aren’t coming to her garden bird table.
- It can take two weeks for birds to find a new source of food.
- At certain times of the year certain birds find enough food in the countryside and don’t need food from the bird table. At the moment I aren’t getting any chaffinches because there is enough food in the countryside hedges for them.
This morning I had the mad thought that it would be nice if I could tell some of my birds to go to her garden. Share the wild birds out a bit 50% for her and 50% for me!
I hope she keeps on trying to feed the birds as winter is walking towards us and food will soon be scarce.
I’m only guessing at the reasons. If anyone else has any ideas please let us know.
Have a good day. Trisha
I restarted feeding birds in my backyard after 6 months of not feeding them. I now have out the same feeders as before in the same places, but no birds! This has been going on for 2 months. I have lots of robins, but only occasional birds at the feeders. I used to have so many birds I almost went broke buying bird seed! What’s wrong?
