Autumnal Early Morning Bird Feeding - and thinking aloud
Sep 15th, 2007 by Birdy Trish
There’s an autumnal feel to the air today. The leaves are falling to the ground. Seven more days and Autumn will truly be here.
6.30 am. I can hear birdsong without opening my door or windows. Looking through my kitchen window into the garden there’s a small flock of sparrows about this morning. Makes a change from starlings. I like sparrows. Out of all the birds I see in my garden, they are my favourite bird. The wren and the thrush are lovely to see and I like the antics of the tit family, but you can’t beat the ordinary sparrow. They squabble between themselves, flit about and always seem cheerful. Sparrows have always been about in my life - when I was a child they inhabited hedges near my childhood home and, of course, I took them for granted.
7am. A blackbird has appeared out of the hedge bottom and starlings are gathering on the telephone wires. How can I attract the blackbird and get rid of the starlings at the same time?
The birdsong is loud and clear in the garden. Surely a small flock of sparrows and a family of chaffinches can’t depend on me for their feed? Not to mention the other birds that flit in and out of the garden. They can’t all depend on me?
8am
Some blackbirds and thrushes have arrived on the lawn at the same time. Hopping on the grass together they make a fine sight. Community spririt in action.
I know we have house sparrows and tree sparrows visiting but I always just seem to call them ’sparrow’ and, in my blog, I don’t distinguish between them. Maybe I should
8.15am. Have put the morning feed out for the chattering birds. They are their, inside the coolness of the hedges and perching on tree branches. There’s a good variety for them this morning. I’ve mixed together a variety of bird seeds, enough for two bird tables and one ground feeder. (will write more info on what feed I put out), some bread that’s been soaked in water, grated cheese, whole peanuts in the feeder, 2 fatballs.
Have to go and help feed the calves and also turn the cows out to grass. The cows are still outside all the time - which is good. Even in the fields the birds abound. Have a good day.
