Young Birds, Cats, Starlings and a puzzle to solve
Aug 12th, 2007 by Birdy Trish
In my last entry I wrote about the quietness of the hedgerows. How wrong I was. I thought all the young birds were now fully fledged. How wrong I was. I have just found three dead
young birds strewn about on our front lawn. These birds are what I would call ‘gollies’. Young birds without feathers, unable to fly and dependent on their parents for food and life. It would have been totally impossible for them to leave the nest on their own. Something has taken them out of the nest and strewn them on our front lawn. So much life taken away. Does this happen all the time, but this time I have seen the proof strewn on the grass outside my front door.
I will have to advice about this. I couldn’t tell what type of young birds they were and I haven’t a clue what could have done this act of ‘murder’ on three innocent young birds.
I have been given an old tripod. This is so I can leave the camcorder going and try and get some good video footage of birds. This morning there are cat droppings under this tripod! Has the pesky, stray cat been using the tripod as a hunting stand?
I would love to know what happens in my garden during the hours of darkness. Now the night has gone and daytime has appeared the starlings have taken over the feeders again.
Not a good start to the day. Yet, when I went out to put food in the bird tables and bird feeders ( and also put a little bit of cheese and apple out) I could see from the corner of my eye a blackbird and a thrush come hopping out of the undergrowth at the bottom of the hedge. It was as though they were expecting me.
