When to feed garden birds

A quick guide to putting food on bird tables all year round
Feeding in Winter
Many birds can die in winter through lack of food.
Small birds such a robins, wrens and blue tits are especially at risk in winter because they cannot store so much energy and use up vital calories searching for food during the short, cold winter days. We can help them and help all our birds by giving them a regular source of energy. Watching birds gather at the bird table on a cold winters day means you have done a good job at helping bird life.
Feeding in Spring and Summer -
Keeps the adults in good condition and gives them more time to look for insects and grubs needed for their growing family of chicks. Put out a variety of food. It’s a good time to include live food too. Baby birds do need protein. Seed eating birds feed their families on insects when they are young. This is an important time to feed as it is the breeding season and the time of year when the young birds need energy to grow.
Use a wire feeder to put peanuts in. Only adult birds can manage to eat whole peanuts.
Feeding in Autumn
This is the time when natural food supplies are most plentiful. But I have found out that the birds still collect at the bird table. The young birds have learnt where the food is and use the bird tables alongside the older birds. It’s still important to put out bird food at this time of year.
ALL YEAR ROUND
Please always make sure there is go supply of fresh water as many birds need to drink at least two times a day.
