A special bird
Jul 25th, 2007 by Birdy Trish
If ever I’ve complained about the cost of bird food and my credit card bill – forget it, ignore me. A moment ago I had a brightly coloured woodpecker feeding
off my old peanut feeder again. I saw it for a fleeting moment earlier in the month but this time it stayed longer.
I have hung the peanut feeder on a fence outside my kitchen window for years. I get a variety of birds fluttering on and off in a party-like fashion. In spring, summer, autumn and winter they are a pleasure to watch
I was stood in the kitchen. In front of me, a few feet away through the window was the woodpecker.
The woodpecker is such a large colourful bird it takes over the whole of the peanut feeder. The red white and black feathers kept my attention. I knew any movement I may make might frighten it away. I have seen it at the feeder before but only for a fleeting moment. This time it looked set to have its breakfast there. I gingerly reached for my digital camera. A ‘BATTERIES NEED CHANGING’ sign appeared. Sighing I slowly reached for my camcorder. I turned it on hoping it was charged up, but it was totally dead. But it doesn’t matter because I’ve got the memory.
Peanuts are a traditional food for our birds . Woodpeckers are especially partial to them. If you feed from a wire mesh feeder you won’t have to worry about fledglings being fed whole nuts.
