Haven’t seen our Barn Owl
Jun 20th, 2007 by Birdy Trish
I haven’t seen our Barn Owl for a few days. It’s a pity the jackdaw jumped to the front of the housing queue and pinched the Barn Owl’s new, purpose build Barn Owl Box that we’d just put up.
Barn Owls are rare now and they have protection from the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. This makes it an offence to disturb the birds when they are making their nests or when they are breeding. This makes it more annoying that we have a barn owl flying round, are trying to help it and have been foiled by jackdaws taking the box!
2006 was a very bad year for Barn Owls. In 2006 there was rain and cold weather. The rain does not affect us our lives – we carry on regardless, but for the Barn Owls it was life threatening. Rain waterlogs the owls feathers and they cannot hunt very well. So last year was a bad breeding year for Barn Owls. Here’s hoping 2007 sees a lot of young Barn Owl chicks ready to face the world.

My husband built an owl box and the pigeons moved in. I have seen the barn owl so I know it is around.
