WHY DO BIRDS SING

WHY DO BIRDS SING?
Why do birds sing? The answer is so they can wake me up at 4.30 in a morning with a very loud dawn chorus. No seriously, they sing to communicatie. But surely there is more to it than that. Yes birds need to show they ‘own’ a particular territory. Yes, they need to attract other birds. Yes, they need to show when danger is near.
Buy why do they sing for so many hours of the day. The birdsong near our house is a masterpiece of different notes and pitches as different varieties of birds sing together in a joyful bird ‘choir’. I’m beginning to think the birds sing because they enjoy singing. I know I enjoy listening.
