What’s in our Barn Own Nest Box
Jun 1st, 2007 by Birdy Trish
Wow! There are owls nesting in an owl box we put up earlier in the year. We purchased this owl box from The Hawk and Owl Trust because we have seen and heard owls nearby. They are so graceful in flight and seem to own the air.
We put it up on a tree facing north and then realised that was bad because of the north winds. Because of this we did not expect an owl to nest in it. We saw movement near the box and have seen an owl flying nearby. Years ago we put an owl box up in a barn and it was used by pigeons. This why we put this owl box on a tree.
In future we could put other owl boxes up and and get advice on which type of bird of prey we could help. This would make sure our efforts and money go in the right direction. More expense. It would be lovely if something we had physically done has helped an owl nest and bring up its young.
I’ve been told there is movement and sound from the box. Let’s hope we have some young owls. Trouble is it will be nearly impossible to get any photos of the owl and its young. Magic. There is something majestic about seeing owls flying and gliding on the air. It is good we can look ahead and know we can put boxes up in the future and see them being used by wildlife. Maybe that is why we humans are here on earth; to realise we are part of nature and that helping other creatures and other people is the most important thing we can do. Trouble is you usually need money to help creatures and also people. Nothing in life is simple.

Bad news. Have found out that it is not an owl in the nest box but a Jackdaw! We have seen a jackdaw flying out of the owl box. There is a NEST OF JACKDAWS in the BARN OWL NEST BOX that I saved up and paid for. How disappointing. Why do I bother.

Have been told that we should clean out the jackdaw nest in Autumn. This would give time to tice an owl to overwinter in the owl box. Here’s hoping.
We’ve taken one step forward and two steps back. We still see the barn owl flying low and sure above us. It hovers silently in the air close to the nest box.

I’m sorry to hear that the birds in the nest box are not owls. My husband made me an owl box for Christmas 2 years ago but only pigeons have used it so far.
