Decisions, Decisions

Have just been out to feed the birds. Rooks swooping again. Will have to find a way to stop them. I can’t afford to buy bird food just to feed rooks.
I went to put feed on the wooden bird table at the back of the house and saw that one of its three legs has rotted away and broken off. It’s toppled over. More expense? This bird table is the one at the back of the house, near some trees. Should I just use the bird table at the front of the house. Trouble is I do get different species of bird on each table. I’ve propped it up for now and have put some feed on it.
The nut feeder is empty! It was nearly full yesterday. I cannot believe that small birds have eaten a full nut feeder in one day.
The left and right side of my brain are in opposition. The right side says help and feed these small creatures who gather in your garden. The left side says it is money wasted. The right hand side of my brain always wins.
From my kitchen window I can see the adult birds are working hard to gather baby-food for their young. They need things that give them energy.
I give bird seed and know that
- Sunflower hearts are good amongst the bird seed.
- It’s good to string up half a coconut as well, but that’s something I’ve never done.
These young birds need protein and even seed eating birds feed their young on insects.
Some birds scour roses and fruit trees for greenfly.
We only have one rose bush and two apple trees. We don’t spray them as it would kill the greenfly.
We have a bit of the garden where there is bare soil. Birds can get food out of the soil and they do.
I have been thinking of putting some actual flowers out that will feed the birds later in the year. More expense! I’ve been told sunflowers are fun to grow. The seeds can be sown indoors and planted out later on (hope I’m not too late to do that). Teazels are good as goldfinches feed off them. Other birds may feed off them as well, but I’m not sure about that. Well I think I’ve talked myself into keeping on feeding these birds. Photos to follow sometime soon.
Time for my breakfast now. Must ring up and find out about Tawny. Hope he has survived and will come back here soon.

I hope Tawny is ok. I had lots of sunflowers in my garden last year and when the floer heads went to seed I collected some and then the birds had a feast on the rest. Let me know if you need some seeds as I have lots.
